Acne – Causes and Management

Acne is a skin disease that affects billions of people worldwide. In United States alone, 16 % of the total population is affected by acne while in Australia about approximately 23 % of the total population is suffering from acne. Acne usually affects skin but the upper part of the chest and back can also be affected in rare cases. Acne can occur in both inflammatory and non-inflammatory forms. Severe acne is inflammatory. In addition to inflammation, pimples, whiteheads, blackheads and scars are also some of the common symptoms of acne.

When does acne occur?

Acne affects people of all ages but most of the sufferers are teenagers. In teenagers, acne is caused by an increase in testosterone during puberty.

What causes acne?

Acne is usually caused by blockages in the follicles. P. acnes is the bacterium known to cause acne and inflammation. However, there are many factors that contribute to the development of acne and associated hyperpigmentation.

Factors responsible for causing acne can be divided into following categories:
• Hormonal
• Genetic
• Psychological
• Dietary
Hormonal factors: Hormonal factors are one of the reasons why teenagers suffer from acne. Hormonal activities such as menstrual cycles and puberty may contribute to the formation of acne. In males, during puberty, there is an increase in testosterone. Other hormones that are related to acne formation include dihydrotestosterone (DHT), dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-I).

Reason why old women develop acne is because of the failing production of hormone called estradiol. This hormone is anti-acne hormone which is not produced after menopause. In addition to acne, lack of this hormone also results in appearance of wrinkles on skin, thinning of skin and thinning of hair. All these symptoms appear in old age due to lack of estradiol.
Genetic factors: Family history of acne plays an important role in determining the reason for acne formation in some individuals. Most of the people who suffer from acne often have other members in their family with acne problem.

Psychological factors: Be it any disease, psychological factors can always contribute to increase the intensity of the disease or condition. Much research has been done to determine the psychological factors associated with acne. The National Institutes of Health (USA) has listed “stress” as an active psychological factor for causing an acne flare. Some other studies have also supported this claim. Stress levels increase the severity of acne.
Dietary factors: Our eating habit determines our health. A high glycemic load diet is known to affect severity of acne. Chocolates contain high amount of sugar which results in high glycemic load. It has also been found that greater consumption of milk can result in severe acne in some people.

How to manage acne?

There are numerous treatment methods and options available. Most common methods are oral medications, medical procedures; such as dermabrasion, laser treatment and phototherapy, and natural methods.
Out of all these treatment options available, medical procedure is undoubtedly the most dangerous and harmful method of treatment as some incidents have been reported in the past where patients had to suffer from irreparable damage to their skin. In addition, medical procedures are very expensive. On the other hand, medications are very common but often result in very harmful side-effects. Some medications have been found to cause depression in patients. Besides, some medications are not suitable for pregnant and breast-feeding women.

Natural treatment- the most viable option

Natural treatment of acne is the safest and yet effective way of getting rid of this disease. Natural methods outclass other treatment options on the following grounds:
• Natural methods are safer and usually free of side-effects.
• Natural methods are cheaper as compared to other modes of treatment.
• Natural methods are effective.
• Natural treatment kits such as herbal treatment kits are easily accessible i.e. you can buy them online.
• Natural methods are credible as your health is not at stake

If you are suffering from acne, you don’t need to waste your money on expensive procedures or medications. We will recommend you to try natural treatment kit as it won’t cost you money or health. However, if you are pregnant or breast-feeding mother, consult your physician before treatment. In short, natural treatment methods are the best mode of acne treatment.
